Nokia Software Updater 1.4.36 Compatibility Issue with Windows Vista SP1

There’s been a compatibility issue with Windows Vista SP1 and Nokia Software Updater 1.4.36, as you might noticed from the title, also you might have read Sadjad’s article on the incompatibility issue.

The problem was while you’re trying to update your phone, you’d disappointedly observe “Nokia Service Layer Host Process has stopped working.”

CAUTION! Do NOT detach the phone from USB! Doing so, you’ll lose your phone’s functionality.

Solution:

  • Open Task Manager and find the file for Nokia Service Layer Host Process named NSU_UI_Client.exe.
  • Kill its process.
  • Start the same process again.
  • Focus to Nokia Software Updater’s interface and search for your phone.
  • It’ll show you a message indicating your phone was disconnected during the update process.
  • Press Retry, and you’re saved!

Funny thing is now that Nokia realized the disaster by observing the growing number of complaints, they just decided to remove Vista’s support since NSU 1.4.39 until they can come up with some idea to fix the issue, so it just makes me quote Jeremy “Jezza” Clarkson (in remonstrance to Ferrari F50’s stupid window rollup module) here: “Very clever!”

Funnier is it doesn’t prevent from installing NSU on Vista/Server 2008 machines at first, but wastes your time with its complete installation process, so you could still be happy for a few seconds, and then when you launched NSU, you’ll get an error dialog indicating “Sorry, Microsoft Windows Vista is currently not supported. Vista support will be added as soon as possible. Visit http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdates for more information.”

And finally, the funniest thing is it even blocks Vista/Server without service pack, while everybody knows it was some compatibility issue with the service pack, not with the Vista/Server itself! Here is a screenshot of what you’ll get if you try to run NSU on Vista/Server 2008:

  1. Hi Folks,

I got problems with version NSU 1.8.10. What I did was, open NSU folder and change the software properties to run it with XP SP2 compatibility. Done!

Unfortunatly my E65 was already up to date... ;)

    Good luck!
